Meet Martin our Data Engineer
My name is Martin Rosenkilde Canning. I am half Irish and half Danish. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Sales & Marketing (CBA) and a Master’s degree in Software Design from ITU.
How did your journey lead you to your current position in the company?
I enjoy variety, which is why I chose to take a different subject for my Masters compared to my bachelors. It was in my Masters that I got to see how Business and IT could blend together, which made me realise the professional area I wanted to focus in. A Graduate Specialist Program (GSP) position was available at Bosch Rexroth, which is designed to allow experience and training in different roles within the company – which was the perfect match for my mentality.
Can you describe your role and responsibilities in the company? What do you enjoy most about your job?
I am a Data Engineer, meaning I work with the company’s customer, product, sales, etc. data, to provide it in a more understandable and manageable way in the form of Power BI dashboards – which Rexroth employees are using daily.
I really enjoy that my tasks are varied and that no two weeks are the same. Because I am always working with new data, exploring new technologies to improve our processes, and different request types, I’m always mentally engaged in something new.
How do you contribute to the company’s success and growth in your current role?
Data is a huge aspect to every employee’s daily tasks. Having this data available, in the right format, and visualized how they need helps them work more efficiently - whether it is for improving our internal process or improving effectiveness with Partners and customers.
What are some of your passions or hobbies outside of work? How do you balance your personal interests with your professional life?
I love all things sport and competition: I’ve tried my hand at a lot of different sports, including Padel, Gaelic football, Snowboarding, Golf, and more, but my favourite is Football. Both with watching and playing you get the social aspect of being around like-minded people, as well as having the freedom to push and express yourself in a competitive environment.
Tell us about a personal achievement that you are particularly proud of.
During my GSP journey at Bosch Rexroth, I spent five months in the Milan office working with the main Data Engineering hub. This experience pushed me outside my comfort zone, and I am proud of how I integrated into a new team, learned valuable skills to take back to Denmark, and adapted to living and working in a country where English is not the dominant language.
What do you value most about the company culture? How does the team collaborate to achieve common goals?
That there is a great cultural mix of calm, fun and professionalism, both within the Danish office but also among my international colleagues. I also appreciate the tradition that ‘any occasion can be celebrated with cake’, even if my diet doesn’t.
Can you share a fun or memorable moment with your colleagues that reflects the company culture?
As part of our Young Rexroth initiative, we went to do an Escape Room. We were split into 2 teams and received identical rooms. So it was a race to see who found escape first (you see the competitive side in me?) The escape room was a lot fun, and the difference between the 2 teams was only a matter of seconds. After, we went for some food and drinks. So a fun night overall.
